Study abroad for three Linfield students was made much more affordable thanks to the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.
Billie Melchor ’25, a nursing student from Portland, Divenson Willis ’24, a sport management major from Coos Bay, and Emma Brissey ’23, a student majoring in history and international relations from Stockton, California, were awarded up to $5,000 for their January Term off-campus experiences.
After sending only one January Term course abroad in 2022, eight different study abroad courses were coordinated by the International Programs Office in January 2023.
Melchor studied “The Philosophy and Politics of Happiness in Bhutan and India” with Assistant Professor Kaarina Beam and Professor Dawn Nowacki. Willis went to the United Kingdom as part of the “Economics of Association Football (Soccer) in England” with Professor Randy Grant. Meanwhile, Brissey took “Storytelling: Ancient and Modern (Greece and Italy)” with Professor Janet Gupton and Assistant Professor Kevin Curry.
